What kind of research ideas could revolutionize markets in the future? Business Finland is looking for answers with the launch of a new Rise to Challenge funding call. The theme of the first pilot is digital solutions that promote security.

Rise to Challenge funding aims high: projects can last up to five years and funding is provided in two phases:

  • Phase 1 (two years): Funding is granted to projects that demonstrate significant productivity benefits or international commercial potential. At this stage, company involvement is not required. The focus is on strengthening the research team and creating a plan for utilizing the results and engaging stakeholders who will benefit from the outcomes.

  • Phase 2: Funding for this stage depends on the results of Phase 1. At this point, stakeholders, such as companies, must be included to help bring the research outcomes to the market.

Key evaluation criteria for pilot projects:

  • The significance and relevance of the mission for Finnish society

  • The goals and quality of the project plan, as well as the plan to engage stakeholders

  • The researchers’ vision of the new business opportunities arising from the research

  • The experience and leadership capabilities of the project leader

  • The diverse expertise of the research team(s) in an international context

  • The initial resources and R&D capabilities and how they are planned to develop

  • The quality of the project's national and international networks

“This is a truly exciting pilot, and I encourage all researchers to participate! Remember to discuss your ideas with Business Finland’s experts before submitting your application”, says Maria Juurikka,Company Specialist at the Innovation Centre.
