Exploring industrial companies’ needs for technology and product development

The Northern Industry 2022 event was held in Oulu on 18–19 May 2022. More than 300 exhibitors and 3000 visitors attended the event after a four-year hiatus.

In the Oulu Hall participants were able to get to know the latest industry launches up close and discuss future prospects for the industry with other professionals.

Business specialist Maria Juurikka and communications trainee Emilia Hoikkaniemi from the Oulu University Innovation Centre team joined the exhibition atmosphere. The Innovation Centre's agenda was to identify the possible needs for companies in the industry sector to cooperate with the University of Oulu in technology and product development.

Some of the companies involved said they already cooperate with the University of Oulu on developments such as sensor technology and cloud computing. Some, on the other hand, noted that product development and research were taking place in other parts of Europe and doubted that cooperation would be challenging in Finland. However, the University of Oulu also cooperates with international companies and universities, so opportunities and resources can be found.

Industrial companies cited issues such as software development, exploitation of artificial intelligence, and research on the recycling of various industrial materials as potential future cooperation needs.

From the University’s perspective, cooperation is also guided by finding the necessary research resources and finding the right funding channels for projects such as theses and dissertation projects.

If your company needs support in technology and product development, the Innovation Centre team can help to identify suitable University of Oulu services for research, education and innovation cooperation!
